Movement perception during voluntary saccadic eye movements.

In order to elucidate the stabilization mechanism of the visual perception duringvoluntary eye movements the perception of a moving object during a eye saccade was investi-gated in humansubjects. The results were analyzed in terms of velocity and displacement percep-tion channels. The experimental results indicate that during voluntary saccades there is nosuppression of movement perception, and, on the other hand, that in darkness the direction ofthe perceived movement is that of the saccade whereas in light the direction of the objectivemovement prevails. The latter discrepancy can be explained by assuming that the perceptualanalysis of movement during the saccade occurs in the displacement channel and that thischannel is provided with a channel evaluation mechanism controlled by the oculomotor centers. Visual Perception of Direction for Stimuli Flashed During Voluntary Saccadic Eye Movements.
In two different experiments, subjects reported on the visual direction of a flash presented during a voluntary saccade relative to the visual direction of a stimulus viewed prior to the saccade. Under the conditions of the first experiment the report given by the subject was primarily determined by the relative retinal positions of the two stimuli. In the second experiment evidence was obtaine...
Covert shifts of attention precede involuntary eye movements.
There is considerable evidence that covert visual attention precedes voluntary eye movements to an intended location. What happens to covert attention when an involuntary saccadic eye movement is made? In agreement with other researchers, we found that attention and voluntary eye movements are tightly coupled in such a way that attention always shifts to the intended location before the eyes be...
Integration of saccadic eye movement signals into visual processing
Successful interpretation of visual motion requires information regarding ocular motion as well as information from retinal image motion. This suggests that eye movement information is integrated into visual motion perception and that the neural activity in visual cortex would be modulated by saccadic eye movements. We describe in this paper the characteristics of the neural activity in the cat...
Voluntary Saccadic Eye Movements Ride the Attentional Rhythm
Visual perception seems continuous, but recent evidence suggests that the underlying perceptual mechanisms are in fact periodic-particularly visual attention. Because visual attention is closely linked to the preparation of saccadic eye movements, the question arises how periodic attentional processes interact with the preparation and execution of voluntary saccades. In two experiments, human o...
The role of visual attention in saccadic eye movements.
The relationship between saccadic eye movements and covert orienting or visual spatial attention was investigated in two experiments. In the first experiment, subjects were required to make a saccade to a specified location while also detecting a visual target presented just prior to the eye movement. Detection accuracy was highest when the location of the target coincided with the location of ...
Localization of visual targets during optokinetic eye movements
We investigated localization of brief visual targets during reflexive eye movements (optokinetic nystagmus). Subjects mislocalized these targets in the direction of the slow eye movement. This error decreased shortly before a saccade and temporarily increased afterwards. The pattern of mislocalization differs markedly from mislocalization during voluntary eye movements in the presence of visual...
